Localized CERT Training varies based on how a city or other jurisdiction choses to implement CERT.  In Arlington, Texas we've primarily designed the CERT concept around raising personal, family and neighborhood awareness and preparedness.  Some cities have CERT Callout Teams that respond to assist Fire and Police with non-emergency functions during large-scale events that may affect many people or large areas that they serve.  Arlington may eventually do that but for now training is focused on basic CERT training and monthly Continuing Education to refine individual skills.

Basic CERT Training in Arlington consists of Instructor-led modules covering the following topics:

  1. Disaster Preparedness
  2. Disaster Psychology
  3. Fire Safety
  4. Communications
  5. CERT Organization / Incident Command
  6. Terrorism and CERT
  7. Pets and Disasters
  8. Disaster Medical Operations
  9. Light Search and Rescue Operations
  10. Disaster Simulation

All of the modules are taught during three hour sessions typically held on a weeknight except Light Search and Rescue and the Disaster Simulation exercise which are a full Saturday following the last weeknight class.  The modules are taught by Arlington-area Emergency Responders and certified CERT trainers who live in the community.
